Scenario Shenanigans: The Series

“Let’s Just Make The Teams Fair”

“Let’s just make the teams fair” is a common statement some promoters will use to adjust the teams to make the teams “Fair”. Some will also use this to shift the games to help a certain side win, as I’ve noticed in the past. While I agree the teams should be fair, I don’t agree with the way they determine who will make the switch. Some games offer the option for teams to make the switch prior to them selecting but there is always those teams or individuals they plan to move regardless.

One scenario event in particular, the sides were close. But they “chose” to move a few key players we had spent months recruiting “to make it fair”, they said. The disturbing part is it didn’t seem to matter to them that they registered under our team name as we recruited them. So my question for the generals is why waste your time recruiting when they can just take any part of your team at any given time?

The generals for the sides are chosen well in advance so they can start their recruiting prior to the game. The recruiting process is interesting for sure, as we generally get multiple attempts to recruit our team personally but it all boils down to us agreeing on what side to take based on the general. Or, we consult a few different teams we have alliances with. In past scenario games, we’ve chosen to go against teams we know based on our opinion of a general and their beliefs, or even based on which side the general will be playing from.

In the end we all are out to have a good time and winning is the ultimate goal. The player shifts and last minute changes to keep the game fair can be legitimate but are also tactics to swing the game to keep some individuals coming back to spend their money. I’ve seen these games played first hand and it’s sad that some promoters will do that to keep their pockets lined with money. Either way, I still continue to play due to my love of the game and the friends (both old and new) that I share the field with.

“The Ref Who Cried Chrono”

This story was taken from a field I used to frequent awhile back and I had a run-in with a certain ref who liked to cry chrono. The field obviously will remain nameless but the events of that game are still fresh in my mind as if it had happened yesterday. The first and most important thing you do as a participant of any scenario game is to chrono your gun. This is done to insure that all players are playing “safely” within the allowed limits of the field. But that’s where my fun begins with this story.

I was playing with my primary gun that I always ran with, a Dye DM 10 Aloha Edition, which is for sale if anyone is currently look for one hit me up on Facebook. Those who know me and my guns know that they never go over 285 and I tend to hold them back to about 260 to 265 for consistency and just overall performance. The morning in question, my gun was shooting in the 250 range and I chose to keep it there instead of taking the time to adjust it so I could spend extra time preparing for the game.

Once the horn blew and the game started, I made way to my spot on the field and dug in for what was going to be a long fight, or so I thought. Within a matter of minutes, I had a ref storm in yelling at me “you’re shooting hot” and proceeded to tell me I need to chrono. When I asked him to chrono me he replied “I don’t have one, you need to go back to base” I chose to play on. Mind you, I had a ref standing next to me giving away my position to those approaching and really pissing me off, to be honest. While I understand he was doing his job, if he bothered to look at my card he would see I was already checked prior to starting. As the other side, was creeping up on my position, the ref was there to lend a hand in pointing out my position. When they finally managed to take me out I went off the field to replenish the air tank and empty pods.

Here is where the story gets interesting… When I reinserted at the base I asked to verify my gun and the findings were astounding. The first shot was 240 then 242 followed by a 238 so I was obviously under the field policy that is 285. The base ref then proceeded to throw me an allen key and told me I could “crank it up” so I did. So after fighting my way back out to my previous spot I managed to take out a few people and then that same Ref came over yelling again that I was shooting way too hot and I needed to chrono. I asked him to chrono me and once again he tells me “I don’t have one, you’ll need to go back to base”. Determined to chrono me, we argue while I continue to play and I told him if he wanted to chrono me he’d have to go get one. I managed to shoot 3 people while arguing and their wiping paint was blatant as it’s hard to wipe a goggle shot. So, I asked him to go check and I’m surprised he did but he then called all 3 clean. My next action I’m not proud of but it got my point across to him that I was over his “Shenanigans”. While he was standing there I took the opportunity to take a “pot shot” at him and I nailed him in the stomach and he doubled over. I did feel a bit guilty but I think the point was well taken by him. While advancing up the field, I did stop by really quick and asked “if that felt hot to him” in which he replied “no”. I then told him I had chrono’d back at the base and they actually had me turn it up.

I normally wouldn’t act like that towards a ref but his blatant disregard for fair play got the best of me and I took it out on him. Now I’d normally say that 2 wrongs don’t make a right but in my case the point was well taken by him and he moved on to harass another person that game.

Sitting back looking at this years schedule, there are many scenario games to choose from. I have decided to highlight a game each month in a new series. For January, it is Dreaded Legends at Florida Tracks and Trails in Punta Gorda. This will be the first year for this event in Florida and CPX has partnered with Florida Tracks and Trails for this January 29th – 31st, 2016 game.

Florida Tracks and Trails opened Memorial Day weekend in 2015 and spans 80 acres. It is part of an 1,100 acre venue referred to as family recreation park and has an AMA motorcross track, 20 miles of ATV trails and a 12 acre beach. The beach boasts pure white sand, palm trees and crisp clear water.  While I have yet to personally explore this venue, from the sounds of it I’ll definitely enjoy it there and I look forward to going down for a day of paintball sometime.

Scenario Shenanigans: The Series “Making A Grown Man Cry”

Scenario Shenanigans: The Series

“Making A Grown Man Cry”

This story comes to you from a more recent scenario event where I got to watch a grown man practically cry. So, how do you make a grown man cry you may be asking… The answer is simple. Their team was immobilized by some outside-of-the-box thinking. A team managed to come up with an alternative to traditional rocket launcher projectiles, and went a step further and had the field owner say it was okay two times. Then, it was only to be reversed the day of by some whiney grown ass men because they were getting shut down.

These men chose to hide behind the net of their tank rather than stand on the field of battle. Behind the net they are free to do whatever (from shooting rocket launchers to shooting paintballs at those who stand before them). Where does the crying come in you may ask? It’s when they can’t reach you with a nerf rocket, however your field approved alternative methods can shut them down. They can’t beat you on the field so they take it off field to the owners, crying “it’s not fair” and “they’re tearing our netting”. At least they claim, so they pull us from the field. Once off the field the lies begin to flood the air. They’re tearing the netting on the tanks we’re told and our response is, let’s go look at your netting.  When no holes were found, the story changed to “they’re just unsafe”. The strange part is, I was watching the approved projectiles go thru the netting into their cabs. The disturbing part I found is the extent in which people will lie and twist the truth to appease those people they favor. I actually had someone lie and say they were using those same projectiles to shoot people, knowing full well this was a bold faced lie as I was next to that individual the whole game. The stories changed again once questioned on it and of course, left another grown man crying.

So after enough whining, the launcher is pulled from the field and they bow their chests thinking the game had been won, but where they oh so wrong. That just pissed off the other side to no end.  There were other shenanigans the second day with the final battle and all, but that’s another story for another day.

I guess it amazes me the extent that a grown ass man will go to all in the name of securing a win. A win that would be tainted by their blatant lies and disregard for the rules and the pure fun of the game. A grown ass man who claims to be about fair play and honesty only to try and utilize any lies they can to take out someone who managed to outsmart them on the field.

Scenario Shenanigans: The Series

“Point Shenanigans”

So, one of the goals I’ve set for myself this year is to be more active on my blog. This year, I plan on doing a lot of heads-up blogging on events I’ve witnessed throughout the different scenario games I’ve attended. I’m sure some will surprise you but most probably won’t shock you at all.

Rather than overload you with all the details at once, I’ll spread them out over time. This will be about 6 years or so of playing scenario ball and it always amazes me the amount of shenanigans that goes on behinds the scenes. Anything from point manipulations all the way up to teams throwing a fit and if they don’t get their way “They Walk” as I’ve heard it put. This series of blog posts will shed to light some of the personal things I’ve witnessed over those 6 years. For the sake of not hurting anyone’s feelings or them getting their panties in a wad, the names of the fields and participants will remain out of my posts. However, those with even only half a brain cell could easily figure them out.

My first experience was at the beginning of my scenario days and at a field I had played at prior to the one scenario game in question. This particular was played to the best of our ability and we were winning as of Saturday night. Mysteriously, by Sunday morning, the numbers had changed. Now keep in mind, no play had happened between the previous number tally and the next morning, but the numbers changed.  When questioned, the response was they had forgotten to add in some missions that the other side had completed. I found this strange as the one side that was winning had numbers that had decreased. Coincidence or slight of hand to keep the losing team coming back to future events?  The winning team took it to heart and decided to go out giving 150% and do what they needed to and it wasn’t even close at the end. Yet when the numbers were added up it was “oh so close”. I’m assuming

“point shenanigans” were evident that day and the game results survived as the team that was winning in the beginning took back what was already theirs.

While I know these accusations are hard to prove they shed to light that at any given time a sneaky promoter can swing the same results to help line their pocket for the next game. Keep in mind not all promoters and game writers do this but always keep an eye out for the “Points Shenanigans”.

No New Year’s Resolutions for 2016

no resultions

With 2015 coming to a close and 2016 kicking off the only thing I keep hearing about are “New Year’s Resolutions”. I find it strange that everyone gets excited over the New Year and this seems to be an excuse to make “Resolutions”. I could sit here and make a list of “Resolutions” for this year, but as many others know by the end of February they’ll be a thing of the past and you’ll be back to your old routines.

So my plans for 2016 include many things I’d like to change in my life and they will come in stages.

Fitness: Fitness this past year has definitely taken a back seat and I hit my heaviest weight pushing the scales at 240. I’ve already started with small changes and dropped back to 238 but this will be tough as I’m at the mercy of my current injury (which I’ll address shortly) so running is out for a little while.

Blogging: My work and personal life were crazy which took away from my ability to blog and thus my site sat for a bit. Don’t get me wrong I still had traffic, but not at all what I would have liked it to be.

Paintball: 2016 is gearing up to what could be a great year for paintball with all the games that have been announced so far. 2016 will hopefully be a great year for the industry and plan to do my part to help them grow that much more.

Education: This year will be the first of many years I plan on devoting to furthering my education for my own personal reasons. This last year life hasn’t allowed me to do so but this year I’ll make more of an effort.

Charity: This one is always on the forefront for the wife and I as we always collect bikes to be donated to charity around Christmas time. Every year we always say we’re going to start earlier and hopefully this will change this year.

Friends: In 2016 I want to try and be able to try and find that balance between work and friends. This past year I feel as if I was a bad friend due to more work and less time with friends.

While everyone can easily make “New Year’s Resolutions”, that always seems to be short lived. I urge you to consider making life changes. Keeping those changes simple and making them gradually versus jumping in completely will help insure you stick to them successfully.

Budget-Friendly Paintballer Gifts

So as the holiday season is quickly coming up on us and my wife has been hounding me, I figure now would be a great time to put together a post containing a few cool items that you may want to consider for the budget conscious paintballer in your life.

1: Exalt Universal  Goggle Case – While everyone always thinks gear nobody really considers protecting that investment. The case not only has a cool looking exterior but microfiber lined inside to help protect the lense.

2: Exalt Loader Case –  Loaders being one of the more expensive and necessary pieces for the paintballer in your life Exalt has stepped up their game and created a great looking functional case lined in micro fiber so it’ll help the loader from getting all scratched up during travel.

Exalt_Loader

3: Exalt Tank Case – Tanks being another expensive investment  they’ve now come out with tank cases. They went the extra mile and lined these in micro fiber as well to help prevent scratching  and preserve that new look to our gear.

4: Exalt Carbon Universal Lens Case —  This was one of my first purchases when they came out. I always carry multiple lens and hated trying to transport them without scratching them. Now I don’t have to worry as the case fits my lenses perfectly and they sell individual dividers to go between the lenses as well.

Exalt Lense

5: Exalt  Microfiber Pod Swab —  Definitely a must have  for those who are constantly having to wash their pods.  This makes it so much easier and really reasonably priced.

6:  Exalt Barrel Case – One thing we love is our barrels. I’m guilty for having  several and find the case to be the best way to keep them organized and protected. This right here will be an investment for those who carry multiple barrels.

Exalt_Barrel

All these items are manufactured by Exalt and look great. The best part is all the above mentioned carry a price tag of $30 and under so they won’t break the bank but they will keep that Paintballer in your life happy while protecting their investment.

Non-Marathon Marathon Training

Well it’s hard to believe that it’s been over a month since my last post but I’ll catch you up. My wife has signed up for her first full marathon so guess who gets to tag along? I guess you can say I’m officially in week 7 of my “non-marathon” marathon training schedule. She’s doing a 4 day a week training schedule which is 18 weeks in length and to date I’ve run them all with her. Not knowing what my limits are physically and mentally will soon become a reality in the upcoming weeks. I’m enjoying the exercise and freedom it’s given me to eat whatever I want but I really could do without the running portion. To date the longest distance I’ve put in with her is 12 miles and I totally didn’t think I could do it. I was also recently matched with a match in the “I Run 4 Michael” group and it’s made the longer distances physically and mentally rewarding. I share my miles and workouts with my buddy Alex and he’s there to give me that extra push every time I feel I can’t continue.

I’ve also had to cut back on the gym activity as my right shoulder has been really irritated and I’m not quite sure why. While I wasn’t doing extremely heavy weights, I do have that competitive nature within where I’m always trying to one up myself. Over the last month I’ve tried to nurse it but with no luck so I’m off to see the doctor to get it all checked out. The thoughts of downtime and missing out on the gym are why I’ve been a tad bit stubborn and kept from going. Several people remind me on a daily basis I need to go so I’ve set an appointment with my regular orthopedist but I hope I can get in to see the sports medicine doctor that I really want to see.

What’s the most extreme run you’ve ever done or trained for? Are you as stubborn as I am when it comes to injuries and going to the doctor?

MyRaceRagz.com Review and Giveaway

**Disclaimer: MyRaceRagz.com provided me with a custom shirt for review and one free giveaway. All opinions are my own and not those of MyRaceRagz.com.**

Being active means having the right gear. Living in Florida, we have hot and humid summers. It’s best to wear dri-fit style clothing to keep sweat and moisture off your body. Since I am active in both paintball and running, I like to wear shirts that suit both purposes, on and off the field. And I recently had the chance to order a custom shirt from MyRaceRagz.com to try out.

When designing my shirt, I decided to go with a long sleeve shirt. I have many sleeveless and short sleeve shirts, and decided a long sleeve would be nice for when it finally cools off. MyRaceRagz.com offers men’s and women’s short sleeve, tank tops, and long sleeve. All materials are light weight.

The website and ordering process is very user-friendly. Whether you use a stock design or have your own, you can easily customize your shirt in minutes. I went the custom route, using my own blog logo. MyRaceRagz.com will even tell you when the images you upload are not good quality based on the size you are trying to use. In addition to the logo on the front, I also did a nickname and number on the back of the shirt in football style.

After ordering my shirt, it arrived in about a week. I ordered a 2X and feel that it was very true to size. This shirt will be perfect for both running and playing paintball in.

Would you like to WIN your own custom shirt? Enter my Rafflecopter giveaway below and be sure to share with your friends.

Back at the gym weeks # 4 and 5

Weeks # 4 and 5 had to be the most challenging for me as we were in the middle of a major project at work which required over time and worked some weird hours. This has taken away from my blog time as well as some other projects that I’ve started and will become reality soon. Taking into consideration all these factors, I was able to successfully maintain my gym routine and still manage to keep within the same weight.

photo 1

photo 2

Week # 4 included my workout rituals but threw a curve ball at me diet wise. Instead of packing my lunch and snacks we’d generally go out for lunch which was a major test and I failed. My diet consisted of everything I shouldn’t have had and the scale reflected that. Week # 4 brought me a 3lb gain and it wasn’t from the working out. My eating out contributed to that and I totally take responsibility for that. The stress and weird hours affected me mentally and I immediately turned to my comfort food as we all do in times of stress. While the workouts were as strong as they ever have been I found my moments of weakness with my sweets ultimately won and I was left to face the consequences of my actions.

photo 1

photo 2

Week #5 turned out to be an awesome week as my workouts continued to be just as strong as the previous week and it was showing in my gains. I was able to make considerable gains on the amount of weight I was doing and the fatigue from those increased weights were not apparent. This did leave me wondering if I had sold myself short when I initially setup my workout. Another surprise week #5 brought me was a present which I received when I went to that evil scale. Thru gaining control of my diet and a little bit of sweat in the gym I was able to counteract my damaging actions of the previous week within .4lbs which I’ll gladly take any day. This made me smile and was reminder of how we as individuals control our destiny and are ultimately responsible for our progress. Yes it’s easy to blame many other things but I’ve come to realize it doesn’t do any good so take ownership of those moments of weakness and learn from them.

photo 3

photo 5

Running continues to be part of my workouts and I’m running 6 days a week. The days I workout I’ll start with a moderate run on the treadmill which is the equivalent of a ½ mile at a fairly aggressive pace. My days outside the gym include running with the wife 3 days a week. Our runs during the week are generally around 3.2 miles and we’re usually out around 5:30am to beat that Florida heat. Sunday’s are the longer ones which we generally run a minimum of 4 miles (it all depends on her training schedule as she’s training for her first full marathon in November). Her training will allow me to push myself to the limit and test just how far I can take my running and survive. One thing I do want to mention and this should be everyone’s focus whether running, biking, paintball or any other activities is HYDRATION. Please remember to hydrate and I’m not talking about grabbing a water to take with you as you head out the door. In order to truly hydrate I generally start at least 24 hours before, but then again I’m drinking more water these days and less soda.

What’s been your worst week ever? How did you recover from falling off the wagon?
