Back at the gym weeks # 4 and 5

Weeks # 4 and 5 had to be the most challenging for me as we were in the middle of a major project at work which required over time and worked some weird hours. This has taken away from my blog time as well as some other projects that I’ve started and will become reality soon. Taking into consideration all these factors, I was able to successfully maintain my gym routine and still manage to keep within the same weight.

Week # 4 included my workout rituals but threw a curve ball at me diet wise. Instead of packing my lunch and snacks we’d generally go out for lunch which was a major test and I failed. My diet consisted of everything I shouldn’t have had and the scale reflected that. Week # 4 brought me a 3lb gain and it wasn’t from the working out. My eating out contributed to that and I totally take responsibility for that. The stress and weird hours affected me mentally and I immediately turned to my comfort food as we all do in times of stress. While the workouts were as strong as they ever have been I found my moments of weakness with my sweets ultimately won and I was left to face the consequences of my actions.

Week #5 turned out to be an awesome week as my workouts continued to be just as strong as the previous week and it was showing in my gains. I was able to make considerable gains on the amount of weight I was doing and the fatigue from those increased weights were not apparent. This did leave me wondering if I had sold myself short when I initially setup my workout. Another surprise week #5 brought me was a present which I received when I went to that evil scale. Thru gaining control of my diet and a little bit of sweat in the gym I was able to counteract my damaging actions of the previous week within .4lbs which I’ll gladly take any day. This made me smile and was reminder of how we as individuals control our destiny and are ultimately responsible for our progress. Yes it’s easy to blame many other things but I’ve come to realize it doesn’t do any good so take ownership of those moments of weakness and learn from them.

Running continues to be part of my workouts and I’m running 6 days a week. The days I workout I’ll start with a moderate run on the treadmill which is the equivalent of a ½ mile at a fairly aggressive pace. My days outside the gym include running with the wife 3 days a week. Our runs during the week are generally around 3.2 miles and we’re usually out around 5:30am to beat that Florida heat. Sunday’s are the longer ones which we generally run a minimum of 4 miles (it all depends on her training schedule as she’s training for her first full marathon in November). Her training will allow me to push myself to the limit and test just how far I can take my running and survive. One thing I do want to mention and this should be everyone’s focus whether running, biking, paintball or any other activities is HYDRATION. Please remember to hydrate and I’m not talking about grabbing a water to take with you as you head out the door. In order to truly hydrate I generally start at least 24 hours before, but then again I’m drinking more water these days and less soda.

Playing Hooky From Work

Mark the date…. 03/19/2013 was the day I officially played hooky from work and spent the day at Universal Studios. Though this was technically a vacation day I chose to spend it at one of my favorite places , Universal Studios, in Orlando, Fl. The forecast called for 40% chance of rain, but there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the temperature was perfect. The day started around 7:30 am when the wife’s mom and aunt arrived at the house. They had no clue what was in store for them but we hopped in the car and stopped at our first destination which was Starbucks. After we all had our drinks we hopped in the car and headed towards the interstate, it was at that time they found out that we were going to spend the day at Universal. The wife and I hadn’t been there in a long time, but my mother-in-law’s sister hadn’t been there and was a Harry Potter fan so it was sure to be a fun time. Once we arrived we made our way to the front gates of Islands of Adventure, knowing she was a Harry Potter fan we went there first. To get there we went in reverse and started at Seuss Landing and worked our way back to Harry Potter. Once we left Harry Potter we went thru all the other areas and stopped at Blondies for a quick lunch. We then proceeded to walk thru the other parts of Islands of Adventure making our way to the front of the park to head towards Universal Studios.

Once we made it thru the gates of Universal we proceeded to the broadcast area to make a quick stop in to see a friend and then we were off to E.T. The wife love E.T. so we rode that and then continued to walk the park, but couldn’t help but notice all the changes and construction that was happening in the background. Making our way back to Men In Black, we passed more construction, but the place was still full of life and families enjoying the day as far as one could see. Making our way past Men in Black we passed what appeared to be the home of an upcoming attraction Transformers 3D which I can’t wait until it’s done and I can go back. We rode Twister and then passed Shrek 4D and the Blue Man Group which I have yet to see, but everyone keeps telling me I need to and headed towards the front gate.

Once back in the car and heading home we decided to go to The Original Hooters in Clearwater for dinner and I was perfectly fine with that. What’s on the menu for dinner after a long day at the theme parks you ask? Well I had boneless chicken wings (classic BBQ), medium buffalo shrimp and fries, and of course I had to wash it down with ice cold Bud Light (as always it was a pitcher… or maybe 2). Oh, and who could forget that I always have to have a piece of peanut butter cup pie to take home with me. The place was pretty busy and service was awesome as usual, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from them and that’s why the wife and I choose to go there out of all the other locations. All in all it was a great day of hooky we played and everyone seemed to have fun. I’m sad it’s over and I’m back at work today but I feel another day coming on soon.

Where’s your favorite place to play hooky? How often do you get play or take time off?

Breaking up is hard to do

Well after much deliberation and thought I’ve decided to call it quits. I’ve thought long and hard about it and there’s just no way around it. This weekend is officially the last weekend Starbucks and I will be together. I’ll make it a weekend treat from time to time, but the day of my regular visits are a thing of the past. It’s not the money, well maybe a little but more so what it doesn’t do for me. Weight loss and Starbucks go together like McDonalds and a Body Builder. So this weekend as I sit and relax while enjoying every last drink, I’ll also be thinking of how much money I’ll be saving and how much better I’ll be treating my body. A long conversation with someone who I feel has become a close friend after all the stories and laughs we’ve shared told me I need to find a way to curve the sweet tooth and kick my workout in the ass. So as of now it’ll just be a weekend treat.

What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to say goodbye to? Has it managed to make it way back into your life?

First cheat day of 2013

Well the diet is off to a great start and for the most part I’m doing well. I still haven’t been able to remove Starbucks from my life completely, but I’m making up for that in other ways. Didn’t get to run today at all as the rain spoiled that, maybe this weekend I’ll get back on track and break in my new Christmas gift Nanci bought me. With that being said, I declare Friday Dec 4th as my first official cheat day in 2013. Thinking long and hard about this I’ve decided Red Lobster is the winner of my first annual cheat day of the New Year. What’s on the menu you may ask? Well I’m starting with fresh cheddar biscuits, followed by a garden salad with French dressing and then the main course will be shrimp. Red Lobster has a 30 shrimp special for $11.99 which is too good of a deal to pass up. I have a feeling the hardest choice I’ll have to make is what type of shrimp. For those who know me shrimp is one of my favorite meals, especially when the wife decides to surprise me with steak and shrimp which is a surprise I just love hearing about. I will say that I’ll be skipping dessert as if I feed the sweet tooth I’ll be screwed and the diet will suffer. Cheat days are important to help maintain your diet and keep the body and mind from craving bad items on a daily basis.

When’s you first cheat day of 2013? Where will you go and what will you have?

Back to the Basics: Week # 5 wrap up

Week # 5 is in the books and it was definitely good and I consider it to be a success. The diet is back on track and I got a bit of exercise in but still not feeling 100% from being sick. Overall even if I wasn’t sick I’d still be happy with the results.

Gym:

I was able to get back to doing my morning walks (I got in 2 this week and it’s generally 5). Although they were not the full 5k’s I normally do, something is better than nothing. I also got to play some paintball this weekend which is excellent cardio as the fields are spread out over 27 acres. I’m still tweaking my workout and think I found the perfect setup. I’m on vacation from work this week so I hope to implement this while I’m off to develop a routine.

Diet:

The diet is definitely back in effect and I feel as if I’ve done well. The wife and I had “Date Night” this past Saturday so that was my one reward meal for the week. I chose to not refer to it as a cheat meal because it’s actually not cheating. When asked where I wanted to go without even thinking about it I said Red Lobster. Red Lobster is finishing up their all you can eat shrimp (which is what I had). The wife had Tilapia with roasted vegetables and for dessert we split a piece of chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The food was great and service was probably the best we’ve ever had (not that we’ve ever had bad service there).

Results:

With week #5 wrapping up I’m happy to report that I maintained. I would have loved to report a loss and if I had been at 100% I feel I would have. In the world of dieting maintaining is definitely a good thing. After all nobody wants to diet forever but it’s all about finding what works for you. That perfect balance between eating and exercise for you. After all everyone’s bodies are different and respond differently to exercise and diet.

Back to the Basics: Week # 3 wrap up

Well week # 3 is a wrap and over all I must say I’m a bit surprised at the results. Given the challenges I’ve faced over the last week I’m extremely happy with my progress. I’ve identified changes I’d like to make and I’m currently working on implementing them. I’ve got to learn to stick to the diet better and not give in to temptation

Gym:

I’ve found motivation in changing it up. My wife has been saying that she’s wanted to start working out again and with us having 2 crazy Australian Shepherds she finds herself up at the crack of dawn. I’ve taken the cardio out of the gym and out in nature. Yes, my wife and I have been walking in the mornings (5:00am to be exact). While it’s harder to walk outside in the mornings on days due to weather not cooperating, I find having someone there to keep up the competitiveness has helped improve my times and amount of cardio I’ve been doing. We’ve committed to walking the equivalent of a 5k every morning we walk.

Diet:

The diet kind of hit a brick wall this week as work had me all kinds of messed up. See we have monthly engineering meetings and they tend to have my weakness “sweets” and I found myself caving. I didn’t just eat one or even two. I found once I started I didn’t want to stop as my sweet tooth had taken over. While I accept responsibility, I also realize that I can’t always deny this craving but need to deal with moderation or find a way to reward myself. Saturday night also proved to be difficult as it was our 11th wedding anniversary so we planned a date night. The place of choice for us was the Outback Steakhouse. My meal was steak and shrimp and of course you can’t go to Outback without getting a blooming onion. While we chose to skip dessert I did partake in an adult beverage and now I feel a tad bit guilt, but not too guilty.

Bloomin OnionResults:

Well the scale has been utilized and with all being said I was up 0.2 lbs. I know it’s not a lot, but it’s still a gain. I consider myself very lucky as it could have very easily been worse, but a gain is a gain. I plan on trying to do better on controlling the cravings and also I’ve committed to doing a 5k walk at least 4 days a week or more for my cardio in the am. I’m trying to find my happy medium still for everything and find myself tweaking things as I go.
